Abstract
:
Objectives: To investigate the breadth and duration of the effectiveness of hybrid computerized executive function and social cognition training for autistic children and their parents. Hypotheses to be tested: Hybrid training with progressive loading will improve executive functions and social cognition in autistic children and reduce parents' stress immediately after, and six months following, the training program, compared to a control intervention. Design and subjects: 134 autistic children aged 8–12 will undergo a two-arm, double-blind randomized controlled trial that includes a five-week computerized training program with (n=67) and without (n=67) progressive loading (experimental and control groups). Assessments will be conducted before, immediately after, and six months after the program. Study instruments: Child: CCTT, go/no-go, Digit Span, Eyes Test, BFRT, emotion labeling task; Parent: Chinese BRIEF-2, SRS-2, CBCL, PSI-SF; Child & Parent: questionnaires on attitudes toward the training. Interventions: Twenty-five 30-minute home-training sessions (5 sessions/week). Main outcome measures: Accuracy and reaction time on performance tasks, (sub-)scale scores on standardized questionnaires, and item scores on customized questionnaires. Data analysis: For each outcome measure, a linear mixed model will be conducted. Subject will be the random factor; time point (pre, post, follow-up) and group (experimental, control) will be fixed factors. Potential confounds (e.g., age, psychopathology symptoms, comorbidity) will be examined to explore variations in responsiveness. Expected results: Children in the experimental group will exhibit greater improvements in executive function and social cognition, with parents reporting children's enhanced executive function and social functioning and their lowered stress in post- and follow-up assessments.
