Abstract
:
Objective: To compare the efficacy of mindfulness-based horticultural therapy (MBHT) with horticultural therapy (HT) and psychoeducation program in reducing mental distress and increasing psychological well-being of adolescents with depressive symptoms in Hong Kong. Hypotheses: There will be a significant difference in mental distress and psychological well-being among the three groups over time, with MBHT leading to a greater reduction in mental distress and an increase in psychological well-being compared to the HT and psychoeducation groups. Study design and subjects: This is a randomized controlled trial comprising an MBHT (n=104), HT (n=104), and psychoeducation group (n=104), which will be conducted among secondary school students with depressive symptoms. Study instruments: Depression Anxiety Stress Scale for Youth and PERMA Profiler will be used. Interventions: The MBHT, HT, and control groups consist of 8 sessions and each session lasts 60-70 minutes. In the MBHT group, in addition to different horticultural activities implemented in the HT group in each session, mindfulness activities will be integrated into the intervention. In the control group, participants will join a psychoeducation program. Main outcome measures: These include level of depression, anxiety, stress, positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. Data analysis and expected results: A two-way mixed-model ANOVA will be conducted. We expect that there will be a significant difference in mental distress and psychological well-being among the three groups over time, with MBHT leading to a greater reduction in mental distress and an increase in psychological well-being compared to the HT and psychoeducation groups.
