Abstract
:
Objectives To examine the bidirectional associations among napping behaviours, nighttime sleep, and mood in young adults with subclinical (minimal to mild) levels of insomnia, depression and anxiety symptoms, both longitudinally and on a daily basis. Hypothesis to be tested 1. Napping behaviours predict nighttime sleep and mood outcomes 2. Nighttime sleep and mood states predict napping behaviours 3. Nighttime sleep mediates the effects of within-person napping adaptiveness on mood outcomes 4. Baseline insomnia and mood states moderate the effects of within-person napping adaptiveness on nighttime sleep and mood outcomes Design and Subjects The study will examine the within-subject and between-subject sleep-mood relationships using a longitudinal and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) design with 150 habitual nappers. Study Instruments Surveys: Standardised scales on sleep and moods Daily Sleep: Sleep diary, actigraphy and electroencephalography (EEG) headbands Daily Mood: Momentary positive and negative mood state ratings Data Analysis and Expected Results A multilevel cross-lagged panel model will be used to analyse the bidirectional relationship between napping characteristics and sleep quality/ negative mood states. Moderation analyses will determine if the daily sleep-mood associations differ across different levels of baseline insomnia and mood symptoms.
